August 13, 2024 at 10:00 AMRicky Ponting thinks Australia will beat India 3-1 in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He says Australia has something to prove after losing the last two home series to India. The last time Australia beat India in a Test series was in 2014-15.
Ponting is looking forward to a competitive series, especially because there will be five Test matches this time, unlike the last two series that had only four. He believes one match might end in a draw due to bad weather, but overall, he’s backing Australia to win.
Ponting also mentioned a potential lineup issue for Australia. He’s unsure if Steven Smith should continue opening the batting now that David Warner has retired. Smith didn’t do well as an opener in the last series in New Zealand, scoring only 51 runs in four innings. Smith was moved up the order to accommodate Cameron Green, who did very well. If Smith isn’t comfortable opening, Ponting thinks the team might need to make a change.
