January 4, 2025 at 8:34 AMIndia's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah left the field on Day 2 of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney due to discomfort, and Virat Kohli took over as captain. Bumrah, who is currently the world's No. 1 fast bowler, went for scans with the team doctor, and there hasn’t been an official update on his condition yet.
Bumrah first left the field just before lunch but returned briefly to bowl one over after the break. However, he left the field again, and substitute fielder Abhimanyu Easwaran replaced him. Before leaving, Bumrah spoke to Kohli, likely explaining his discomfort, after which Kohli quickly adjusted the bowling strategy. Young bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Nitish Kuma Reddy stepped up, helping India bowl Australia out for 181, giving India a slim 4-run lead.

Bumrah’s potential injury could significantly affect the match and the series, as he is not only India's leading bowler but also captaining in Rohit Sharma's absence. It's unclear if he’ll bowl in the second innings. At the tea break, Star Sports anchor Mayanti Langer mentioned it might be a back issue, the same area Bumrah had surgery on a couple of years ago.
Earlier in the day, Bumrah made history by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, becoming the top Indian wicket-taker in a Test series in Australia. His 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy broke Bishan Singh Bedi’s record of 31 wickets in the 1977-78 series.
