August 28, 2024 at 11:14 AMAmid uncertainty over his future as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), KL Rahul met with the franchise owner, Sanjeev Goenka, earlier this week. Recent reports suggest that LSG will retain Rahul for the 2025 IPL season, but not as captain. This follows an incident last season where Goenka was seen having a heated conversation with Rahul after SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) easily chased down 166 runs in just 9.4 overs.
Rahul's position as captain has been in doubt since that exchange with Goenka, and there are rumors that he might leave LSG and enter the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Despite the uncertainty, Goenka spoke about his relationship with Rahul, stating, "I don't want to comment on speculation. All I will say is KL Rahul is family," as quoted by RevSportz.
On Monday, Rahul met with Goenka at his office in Kolkata to discuss the situation. The two had a long meeting, after which Rahul headed to Bengaluru to begin his Duleep Trophy practice at the National Cricket Academy.
According to sources, the meeting focused on captaincy and retention issues. While Rahul is unlikely to continue as captain, as he wants to focus more on his batting, Goenka remains confident in him and plans to retain him as a player. The franchise is still considering other captaincy options, with Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran being the top contenders.
For the Duleep Trophy, Rahul will play for Team 'A', which is captained by Shubman Gill.
