After India’s loss in the 4th Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the team is facing heavy criticism, and a rift seems to be forming between head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management. According to reports, Gambhir has been frustrated with the team’s performance and has pushed for veteran Cheteshwar Pujara to be brought back into the squad. However, the selectors have turned down his request.
Pujara, who has been out of the team since the 2023 World Test Championship final, has had great success in Australia. Despite his struggles in the WTC final, his record in Australia is solid, with nearly 1,000 runs in 11 Tests and an average of 47.28.
Gambhir’s push for Pujara’s return highlights the growing concerns over India’s shaky top-order. Even after India’s win in the first Test at Perth, Gambhir was still advocating for Pujara’s inclusion, knowing that his experience could bring stability to the team.
After the 4th Test defeat in Melbourne, Gambhir reportedly gave a harsh evaluation of the players’ performances. Another report mentioned that a senior player is ready to take over as captain, as they feel the younger players are not prepared for the leadership role yet.
Pujara’s Record in Australia
Pujara has been key to India’s success in Australia in the past. In the 2018-19 series, he was the team’s top scorer with 521 runs, playing a vital role in India’s first-ever Test series win there. His ability to wear down bowlers has earned him respect, with Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood admitting, “I’m happy that Pujara is not here. He makes you work hard for his wicket.”
India’s struggle without Pujara continues, but it seems the problem is deeper than just his absence. Gambhir’s strong words might signal that changes are coming for Indian cricket.
