December 26, 2024 at 12:52 PMVirat Kohli was fined 20% of his match fee and given a demerit point for a minor on-field collision with Sam Konstas, Australia’s 19-year-old debutant, during the fourth Test at the MCG. The incident happened on the first morning of the match after a heated exchange between the players. Australian opener Usman Khawaja and the umpires quickly stepped in to diffuse the situation.
Kohli accepted the charges under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact during a game. This meant no formal hearing was required, as Match Referee Andy Pycroft suggested the penalty.
Konstas impressed on debut with a fearless 60 off 65 balls, playing bold shots that unsettled the Indian bowlers. His aggressive style frustrated Kohli, which led to the brief shoulder contact at the end of an over. Khawaja calmly handled the situation, patting Konstas and placing a hand on Kohli’s shoulder to bring things under control.
Strong Start for Australia
Australia ended the day in a commanding position at 311/6. Along with Konstas’ brilliant debut, Usman Khawaja (57), Marnus Labuschagne (72), and Steve Smith (68*) contributed crucial runs. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s response with three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep took one wicket each.
With the pitch becoming tougher to bat on by the evening, India’s batting lineup will face a stiff challenge when they start their innings on Day 2.
