February 20, 2024 at 8:21 AMFormer Indian batsman and teammate of MS Dhoni, Manoj Tiwary sparks a controversy after saying that despite scoring a hundred he was dropped from the team and put full blame on the skipper of that time.
Tiwary who scored 287 runs from 12 ODIs, including a memorable unbeaten knock of 104 against the West Indies in Chennai in 2011, raised questions about the selection process.
Despite his notable performances, he faced a challenging period, being dropped for the next 14 matches under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
Manoj Tiwary said on PTI “I would like to ask Dhoni why I was dropped from the playing 11 in the 2011 World Cup after scoring a century? I had the potential to be a hero just like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but could not be. Today when I see many people getting more opportunities on TV, I feel sad”
Before his retirement, he sparked controversy among IPL-oriented cricketers and said to ban the Ranji trophy as players are not prioritizing Ranji over IPL and T20 format cricket.
He posted on Twitter/X that, the Ranji trophy should be "scrapped" but did not elaborate on the subject as he was an active BCCI cricketer. He is fined 20 % of his match fee for that remark.
After his statement he said on FaceBook, he would open up after retirement from cricket.
Manoj Tiwary said, “Those who don't play IPL often go to Dubai or other places whenever they find some free time. However, this trend is diminishing the significance of the prestigious Ranji Trophy, I can observe that young players have adopted an IPL-centric mindset”.
Now, expressing any opinion might lead to a ban. I have already been penalized with a 20% reduction in my match fee for just one post, I could have spoken up earlier, but it seems that the BCCI is no longer governed by sportspersons: it's now run by politicians, but I am also a sportsperson; Manoj said in an interview.
