Chennai Super Kings clashed with Rajasthan Royals in the 61st match of the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 12. Given that CSK lost its previous encounter, it was a must-win game for them to have a safe passage to playoffs and the five-time IPL champions showed their class to defeat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets.

While CSK put up a clinical performance in the crunch game, one of the main talking points was the controversial dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja. During CSK’s run chase, the southpaw was dismissed obstructing the field and this created a lot of buzz on the internet.

During the penultimate ball of the 16th over, Jadeja tapped Avesh Khan’s short-of-a-length delivery to third man. Though the southpaw and non-striker Ruturaj Gaikwad ran the first one with ease, there was a miscommunication for the second run. Jadeja was halfway down the pitch for the second run but the CSK skipper was not interested. Meanwhile, the fielder from the third man threw the ball sharply to the keeper Sanju Samson. Then the RR captain took a direct hit at the bowler but Jadeja came in the way and the ball hit the CSK batter. Upon review, the third umpire thought Jadeja’s move to be intentional and the ace all-rounder was given out.

Jadeja was not at all pleased after being given out. With this, Jadeja become only the third batter to be out obstructing the field in the history of the Indian Premier League. Yusuf Pathan and Amit Mishra were the other two to be dismissed in this manner.

Talking about the game, RR won the toss and elected to bat. However, the ploy misfired as the batters failed to adjust to the pace of the wicket and could only manage 141 runs in 20 overs. CSK in response, chased down the target in 18.2 overs with five wickets in hand.
