April 28, 2024 at 1:04 PMShubman Gill is one of the exciting prospects in the Indian Premier League. The ace batter has put up an exhibition of his elegant stroke play and piled on runs for fun. In IPL 2023, Gill went berserk and plundered 890 runs in 17 games for Gujarat Titans at a magnificent strike rate of 157.80. Courtesy of his exploits, GT made it to the finals in the previous season. However, he has not been at his best in the ongoing IPL season.
Gill was tasked to captain the GT side ahead of IPL 2024 with Hardik Pandya changing his base to Mumbai Indians. However, the GT skipper has struggled to string consistent scores to his name. Barring two half-centuries, the ace batter has nothing to show for this IPL edition. He has scored 320 runs in 10 matches this season which is largely due to two knocks. It might be the case that captaincy is weighing him. Below are his last four outings this season (most recent first): 16 (19) vs RCB, 6(5) vs DC, 35(29) vs PBKS, 8(6) vs DC
Gill has been the lynchpin of the Gujarat batting line-up and his struggles have resulted in the mediocre performances of the team as well. In the 10 matches GT has played, they have won just four games. If the ace batter does not strike form soon, his team could face an early exit from the competition.
Moreover, this being a year of the T20 World Cup, Gill’s form will also impact his chances in the marquee tournament. With Rohit Sharma set to lead India in the marquee tournament in June, India needs to select his opening partner. With Virat Kohli doing well in the opening slot for RCB and Yashasvi Jaiswal too, having shown his fearless style of cricket for RR, Gill is falling behind in the race. With T20 World Cup 2024 selection day approaching nearer, It does not seem Shubman will be able to make it to the provisional 15-member squad.
