Sri Lankan cricket has lost one of its most iconic supporters, Uncle Percy Abeysekera, who passed away yesterday at 87.

Known affectionately as "Uncle Percy," he was a fixture at Sri Lanka cricket matches for over 50 years. With his trademark colourful outfits and infectious energy, Uncle Percy cheered on generations of Sri Lankan players from the stands.

Uncle Percy first started attending matches in the 1960s when Sri Lanka was still an associate member of the ICC. He was present for Sri Lanka's first-ever Test match in 1982 and continued supporting the national team as it achieved World Cup glory in 1996.

Even as he aged, Uncle Percy remained a passionate supporter, travelling to matches across the island and beyond. He was known for his loud and enthusiastic cheering, inventive props and banners, and warm interactions with players.

"Uncle Percy was one of our greatest fans and it was always a joy to see him in the stands," said Sri Lankan former skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne. "His spirit and love for Sri Lankan cricket will be greatly missed."

Beyond his fame as Sri Lanka's #1 supporter, Uncle Percy had a successful career as a Public Relations Consultant and was deeply devoted to his family and community. He will be remembered for his infectious smile and the inspiration he provided to generations of cricket lovers in Sri Lanka.
