March 12, 2024 at 5:32 AMDelhi Capitals' dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, is on the cusp of a remarkable return to competitive cricket after enduring 15 months of recovery from injuries sustained in a car accident. The 26-year-old, heralded as one of India's most promising talents, has been continuously working on his fitness and skills post the mishap in December 2022.
In a recent update provided by Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting, it was revealed that Pant showcased his prowess behind the stumps during practice games, dispelling concerns about his wicket-keeping abilities. Ponting expressed optimism about Pant's readiness for the forthcoming IPL season, indicating that he might even resume captaincy duties for the franchise, provided his fitness allows.
"Pant is doing well and he is batting and is also keeping. Shortly, we (BCCI) will declare him fit. If he can play in the T20 World Cup for India, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us," stated BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, underlining the significance of Pant's potential inclusion in India's squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup to be held in West Indies and the USA.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring Pant's progress daily, with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore overseeing his fitness regimen. VVS Laxman, head of NCA, and Nitin Patel, head of sports and science at NCA, are instrumental in evaluating Pant's fitness reports, paving the way for his eventual return to competitive action.
Ponting expressed his eagerness to witness Pant's return to the cricketing arena, highlighting the global anticipation surrounding the player's comeback. "I’m very hopeful, not from a selfish point of view as the coach of the Delhi Capitals, but I want to see him back playing cricket again. I think the whole world wants to see him back playing cricket again and just playing with that youthful exuberance that he has," Ponting remarked, reflecting on Pant's immense talent and potential to influence matches with his dynamic style of play.
Despite being sidelined from cricket for over a year, Ponting remains confident in Pant's ability to make a seamless transition back into the sport. "I don’t think he’ll be scared by the comeback. The fact that he’s missed 15 months of cricket, I don’t think it’ll faze him too much. I think he’ll just go out there and certainly, that’s my job anyway – I’ll be telling him to go back out and play the way that he’s always played," Ponting affirmed, emphasizing the importance of Pant staying true to his natural game.
As Pant continues his journey towards full recovery, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await his return to the field, hopeful that he will resume his role as a key contributor for both Delhi Capitals in the IPL and the Indian cricket team on the international stage. With Pant's unwavering determination and the support of his team and fans, his comeback promises to be a spectacle eagerly anticipated by cricket lovers worldwide.
